Medical school transfer and GMC (UK) Registration

Hi @SamMch!

I know it seems a bit confusing, but you’ll get the hang of it, don’t worry.

So, first things first. From early 2024, the GMC is going to use a new licensing exam, the UKMLA. Most likely the EU graduates will have to sit for it as well. As you’re graduating in 3 years time, you’ll have to take it in order to get full registration. More on this here . You’ll still need IELTS/ OET.

After GMC registration, you can apply for FY2 Standalone. The rules for applying can be found here. But you’ll need to check those again as there’s a lot of time ‘till your graduation and things can change.

Hope it was helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask for more clarification if needed. Best wishes🌸

Hello @rozemaryvijdiac !
And thank you again for your reply!
One last thing: so we have to take PLAB or UKMLA (starting from 2025) anyways, even if we have a relevant European qualification to be eligible for full registration? Since as it is now:

From GMC website:

Who is eligible for full registration?

To be eligible for full registration, a doctor must be able to meet one of the three options below.

  1. Completed the first year of the Foundation Programme (F1) in the UK.

  2. Be a graduate with an acceptable primary medical qualification from a country outside of Switzerland or the UK. And be able to prove that you have enough clinical experience to practise medicine in the UK. You can do this in one of five ways.

  • A pass in the PLAB test
  • Sponsorship by a GMC approved sponsor
  • An acceptable postgraduate qualification
  • Relevant European Qualification
  • Eligibility for entry onto the Specialist or GP register
  1. Be a Swiss or UK national (or benefit from enforceable community rights) and have either:
  • a formal qualification listed in
    or
  • an acceptable primary medical qualification from outside the EEA (which has been recognised in Switzerland) with evidence of an acceptable pattern of experience

Having a relevant European qualification makes you eligible for full reg. without having to pass PLAB.
Is it true? Please correct if I’m wrong
Clearly things can change with UKMLA since it’s a standardized licensing exam for everyone.
Thank you in advance

Hi again @SamMch!

Yes. Starting from early 2024, UKMLA will be a must for everyone. Technically, they haven’t decided yet regarding EU graduates (because Brexit), but most likely is going to be the requirement for them as well.

Yes, for now. But as I’ve previously said, things will most definitely change with the UKMLA after 2024. The GMC has a lot of resources regarding this subject on their website .
